Edward Conklin, M.D.
Dr. Conklin’s interest in medicine began at age 15 when he successfully performed CPR on his grandfather. Shortly afterward he decided to become a physician. He studied as an undergraduate at Tufts University, where he became involved with a “think tank” on doctor-patient relationships as part of his major in psychology. He went on to attend Tufts Medical School in Boston, MA. During his first year of medical school, he co-taught a seminar at Harvard University on the therapeutic alliance created between doctors and their patients. He chose Family Medicine as his specialty and completed post-graduate training at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR.
Following residency, Dr. Conklin moved to Seattle because of his love for the area. He served as a clinical faculty member with the Swedish Hospital Family Medicine Residency and as an assistant professor at the University of Washington Medical School. During this time, he also practiced with Swedish Partners Medical Group, which later became part of Pacific Medical Center.
In 2000, Dr. Conklin left group practice to found Carena in an effort to create a better environment for medical care. He currently serves as Carena’s Chairman and Chief Medical Officer while continuing to provide care as one of its physicians. Dr. Conklin sees the doctor-patient relationship as critical to successful patient education. He believes Carena is as an important avenue to foster this relationship and create a better solution for patients and their families. “Carena has allowed me to practice medicine for the reasons I went into it – being able to help my patients whenever they need me and having the time to make the most of the teaching and learning moment we create.”
Dr. Conklin’s outside interests include spending time with his wife, Megan, and their two children, as well as skiing, hiking, sailing and coaching soccer. Dr. Conklin was elected by his peers as one of “Seattle’s Top Doctors,” as reported in Seattle Magazine in both 2000 and 2002.
